The story of Ultima IX: Ascension is set in the year 1648 of the Age of Shadows, two years after the events of Ultima VII: Part 2 - Serpent Isle. The evil triad of Mondain, Minax, and Exodus has been destroyed, and the world is once again at peace. However, a new evil has arisen in the form of the Guardian, a powerful being who plans to enslave all of Britannia.
The player takes on the role of the Avatar, the hero of Britannia, who must stop the Guardian and save the world. The game is played from a third-person perspective, and the player can explore the world freely. The game features real-time combat, and the player can use a variety of weapons and magic spells to defeat enemies.
Ultima IX: Ascension received mixed reviews upon release. Some critics praised the game's graphics and gameplay, while others criticized its buggy nature and lack of polish. The game was a commercial success, selling over 500,000 copies.
