Vestron

Vestron is a video game in the action genre and published by Players Software originally released in 1986. It is currently playable on MSX.

In 1986, high definition gaming was still a relatively new phenomenon. As 8-bit consoles and computers rose in popularity, Vestron's arrival on the MSX marked an important milestone in the development of the platform, introducing gamers to a captivating new world of exploration, discovery and excitement.

Vestron was developed within the same vein as other MSX titles from the era; a traditional top-down action adventure in a bright, vibrant environment. The game's main protagonist is a hero by the name of 'Mudrun', bravely traversing a series of extremely varied and challenging environments. The aim of the game is to locate five pieces of the mysterious 'Magma Stone', which Mudrun must piece together to save the world.

The game's levels are incredibly varied; players will traverse grasslands, deserts, snowy mountains, underwater rivers, graveyards and many more before completion. Each level brings with it an assortment of enemies, from devious crows to invulnerable robots, as well as a vast array of useful items and weapons that can be collected. Such resources can be used in increasingly inventive ways and the clever player will often find shortcuts and other surprises along their journey.

Vestron offers a relatively complex interface, with numerous puzzles and secrets to uncover. The control system is straightforward and logical, allowing players to get up to speed quickly and enjoy the game's array of replayable locations. The vibrant, 'cartoon feel' aesthetic and charming 8-bit soundtrack mean that even after 35 years, Vestron is still capable of providing a nostalgic joy for players of all ages.

Vestron's combination of exploration and fast-paced combat, whilst often daunting, continues to captivate fans around the world. Boasting a variety of challenges, rich visuals and catchy sounds, Vestron is rightly remembered as a classic offering on the MSX and stands today as an example of the golden age of 8-bit gaming.
