VIQ-Bert is perhaps not the first, or even the best variation of QBert for the VIC-20, but it is by far the smallest, weighing less than a kilobyte (programmed for the 2002 edition of the MiniGame Compo coding contest).
As in the original QBert, the player moves in a 3D pyramid, coloring the fields of the pyramid as he moves. Coloring all the tiles clears the level. This would be easy if it weren't for the fact that enemies move randomly in the pyramid itself. Unlike the original QBert enemies, they don't change the color of the tiles in the game, but the contact is deadly. Another way to die is to fall off the pyramid. Later levels require coloring the same tiles multiple times, and even later, you can't go through the same tile twice without changing the color again, so an element of strategy is introduced.
