VR Golf '97 is a video game in the simulation genre developed by Gremlin Interactive Limited and published by Gremlin Interactive Limited originally released in 1996. It is currently playable on SEGA Saturn.
When SEGA Saturn released VR Golf '97 in 1996, it was an instant hit with gamers. The four player mode was especially enjoyed by those who wanted to challenge friends locally. Playing on the same television enabled players to achieve victories in head-to-head competitions. Enhanced by the SEGA Saturn's 3D graphics, gamers consistently boasted of how great the game looked.
The control of the game was versed enough to keep experienced and inexperienced players engaged at the same level. Gamers could choose to play on one of the numerous beautifully designed golf courses that spanned the four levels: Be Baron Country Club, Honkey Lips County Club, American Classic Golf Course and Superlink Golf Course.
In addition, users had the additional ability to customise their avatars to represent their desired style of golfing. VR Golf '97 provided plenty of the options that practically allowed gamers to take on the style of historic golfers and imitate their skills with cares for detail that gave players a true sense of identity in the game.
Players were able to fully immerse themselves in the game with the blaring and bustling sounds befalling the course. Both before and after each stroke, players had real-time access to data and post-round score statistics, aiding in the strategy of the game and providing more depth and detail to the golfing experience.
The game also allowed for head-to-head gameplay, as well as battling against CPU controlled characters, which presented varied difficulty levels and presented players with a reasonable and fair challenge. Artificial Intelligence (AI) worked to galvanise the gaming experience, but was difficult to create given the limitations of SEGA Saturn's technology at the time.
VR Golf '97 dominated the gaming scene in 1996 and was a relaxing but fiercely competitive title. It offered options that kept gamers entertained and was an innovative addition to the SEGA Saturn's library.
