West Phaser

West Phaser is a video game in the action genre developed by Loriciel SA and published by Loriciel SA originally released in 1989. It is currently playable on DOS, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST.

This set came as a bundle with Loriciel's light pistol controller of the same name. Most of the light pistols opted for a futuristic look, but the West Phaser was more inspired by 19th century Colt revolvers, and aptly the included game was a Western-themed shooter, with mechanics similar to Operation Wolf, except for the fixed screens.

Up to six players could choose their characters from a 'Who's Who' of the American Old West: Doc Holliday, Calamity Jane, Will Bill Hickok, and all the other great lawmen and gunslingers of the collective imagination. Outlaws like Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and Belle Starr sow terror in the dark saloons and dusty streets, and it's your job to stop them if you want to get the coveted sheriff's badge... or the big bounty on their heads.

Each location throws wave after wave of humorously drawn attackers at you: bandits, cowboys, Indians, Mexicans, all mixed into one big pile of cartoonish violence. A lit candle represents your life bar and there are plenty of enemies trying to blow it out, so you'll have to be quick on the draw (but don't forget to protect the innocents). When the face of the bandit you're chasing starts flashing on the status bar, get ready for the showdown: catch him and the reward is yours.

Apparently, the light gun wasn't the biggest hit, and less than three years later the game was re-released, this time with support for other input devices - and a new title, Steve McQueen: Westphaser, despite having exactly nothing to do with any of the McQueen characters.

It is possible that we have multiple downloads available when different versions exist.
