Wilderness Campaign is a video game in the role-playing (rpg) genre developed by Synergistic Software, Inc. and published by Synergistic Software, Inc. originally released in 1979. It is currently playable on Apple II.
The sequel to Dungeon Campaign adds expansions and game mechanics inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset, and takes the graphic role-playing game into the wilderness. Wilderness Campaign is another turn-based game set in a fantasy world, this time starring a group of adventurers on a mission to save the once prosperous kingdom of Draconia from the nasty necromancers who run it from their magically protected fortress. The group is the star of the show.
Stats are set according to party elements such as experience, charisma, dexterity, speed and strength, and weapon and armor classes are calculated from the party's equipment.
Draconia consists of a variety of environments, including plains, swamps, mountains, deserts, jungles and wastelands. Each zone has its own monster population, random hazards that require saving throws (sandstorms, landslides, etc. ) and obstacles that force you to retreat unless you have special equipment (swamps, chasms, bushes, etc. ). In the new game, temples, ruins and castles are randomly placed in the terrain, where most of the action (and loot) is located. In addition to these, there are also friendly villages. Here you can trade money, hire messengers and warriors to increase your ranks, and bargain with local merchants for food, weapons, armor and other items. For example, you can buy donkeys to transport large quantities of goods, or magical items that have specialized functions of their own.
When you encounter a monster, the battle will take place in a ruin in the kingdom or in a random outdoor location. There are four types of monsters: normal, giant, flying, and undead, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Combat consists of attack and defense rolls by both sides, which are also influenced by luck, bonuses and defense/attack spells. On each turn, you can also choose to flee or improve your position and increase your bonuses.
The ultimate goal is to destroy the Necromancer and his standing army. To do this, you need to be well equipped and have powerful magic items (which can only be obtained from the White Mage). If you decide to quit the game, you can save your progress and resume the game later.
