Willow Pattern

Willow Pattern is a video game in the action genre developed by Mr. Micro Ltd. and published by Firebird Software originally released in 1985. It is currently playable on Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum.

Willow Pattern is an action game inspired by the characteristic 'Willow Pattern' design used on ceramic cookware since the late 18th century, inspired by Chinese porcelain patterns. The graphics and locations of the game are taken from the original painting 'Willow Pattern'. The game's storyline is inspired by the legend invented to promote sales of the patterned chinaware.

Chang and Koong-Shee are in love. The problem is that Chang is an employee and Koong-Shee is a princess. To make matters worse, she is forced to marry against her will to a merchant named Ta Jin and held on the grand grounds of a Mandarin palace. You play Chang and must enter the palace grounds, get a key and find the princess's hiding place to rescue her from the grounds and take her away on a ship. The giants guarding the princess, scattered throughout the grounds, block the paths and some even throw swords at you. You start your quest unarmed but swords can be found to throw at the giant guards. Swords are limited, so you need to use them carefully, but a dead giant will leave one behind. There will be some bridges to cross, leading to an arcade sequence where you must jump over rocks while avoiding being hit by giants. When you touch a giant or get hit by a sword you lose one of your five lives. There is also treasure scattered around to find.

Willow Pattern is an on-screen maze game viewed from the side looking down from above. The arcade sequence is viewed from the side on one screen. The joystick or keyboard is used to control Chang. In addition to the main game area you can also see how many lives are left and a percentage of how the game is completed.
