Word Zapper is a video game in the action genre developed by James Wickstead Design Associates and published by U.S. Games originally released in 1982. It is currently playable on Atari 2600.
With Word Zapper, the goal is to zap three words in 99 seconds. First, the current word will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. By manipulating the spaceship, you must recreate this word by zapping the letters that appear at the top of the screen in the correct order. To make this task more difficult, various asteroids will fly by horizontally. Some asteroids will cause you to lose time, while others will destroy your ship and end the game. The spaceship is also equipped with a laser, which can be used to destroy asteroids.
If you shoot five asteroids in a row, you will earn 'freebies' that you can use instead of cards. You also have to use the 'freebies' to advance to the next word after you have cleared all the necessary letters; the game ends when you manage to clear three words, or when the time limit runs out, or when your spaceship is destroyed by an asteroid. There are many variants of the game. The speed and density of the asteroids, the speed of alphabet scrolling, the choice of erasing random words or letters, and many other variations are available.
