'Wrangler' was a MSX game that hit the market in 1985 and quickly shipped in wide quantities. Developed by Active Mind, this maze-style game required plenty of skill to complete. You play a cowboy who, using a joystick, rides his horse around the screen in an attempt to reach the safe zone without being captured by the enemies.
The graphics of this title were above average for the time. Sprites were well detailed and the entire game had a unique western theme that was quite captivating. Colours were vibrant and the sound effects were very pleasing to the ear. All of this made ‘Wrangler’ a truly pleasurable experience.
Gameplay involves avoiding obstacles while attempting to gather bonuses. These bonuses come in various forms such as hearts that restore health and rainbow bridges that temporarily allow safe passage across hazardous terrain. There are multiple levels of difficulty and each level will provide an increasingly challenging experience.
The success of ‘Wrangler’ relies heavily on user reflexes. As enemies move faster and obstacles become increasingly tricky, the player must make quick decisions in order to progress. While the game is relatively short, it requires an intense amount of focus and concentration to muster the skills to reach the end.
