Description Xenopods
Xenopods is a decent shareware game from Softdisk, designed by Tom Hall (who would later be known for id Software). The plot is a pretty standard sci-fi cliché that you've seen a million times before: you're the sole survivor of an outpost that's been attacked by alien larvae. As you pilot your security drone through each sector, you must repair communication links to alert the Federation, while avoiding or killing the alien critters roaming the outpost.
The game, like others designed by the founders of id Software, has very fluid animation and is quite fun. The graphics are quite detailed considering it's 16-color EGA, and there are a lot of interesting weapons you can find and use. The gameplay is pretty simplistic: just pick up weapons and shoot everything you see, taking care to replenish your shields after damage. But fortunately the levels and alien critters are varied enough to keep your interest for quite some time. Commander Keen's humor is missing in this one, which is a shame.
If you've enjoyed Softdisk's other games, Xenopods is a solid action game that's worth a look even if it doesn't keep you up all night.
