Zarkon is a top-down horizontal shooter in which the screen scrolls from left to right constantly as you try to get your spaceship through eight heavily defended galaxies. As you move through each galaxy, there are various alien ships flying around the screen to destroy or avoid, as well as ground defenses, and if you hit an alien, a ground defense, or get shot, you lose one of three lives.
