Zoo is a video game in the adventure genre developed by Radarsoft BV and published by N.V. Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken originally released in 1987. It is currently playable on MSX.
In 1987, MSX released their classic game, aptly named Zoo. It was the first MSX game to feature a graphical user interface, as well as the first to have its own exclusive cartridge, delivering an utterly captivating game experience for its time.
The aim of the game was to create and manage the ultimate zoo, becoming a master-animal keeper, experiencing the life of a zoo director. You had to seek out and catch wild creatures before bringing them back to your zoo, ensuring you had the best variety of species in order to maintain your guests’ interests and keep your zoo profitable.
The graphics were brightly colored, with cute animal sprites and attractive zoo enclosures to accessorize your park. One great aspect of Zoo was its customization; not only could you choose from a diverse range of research, animal-keeping and business systems, but you could also build your zoo enclosures from scratch, knocking down the old ones to make way for the new attractions and outside eateries. As the game progressed, you became tasked with larger, more complex objectives, unfolding a captivating and immersive plot.
Not only did Zoo feature an innovative graphic user interface, but included a remarkable soundtrack composed by Koichi Sugiyama. Its charm, attractive visuals and fun gameplay made Zoo a real hit and stand out among the MSX library and other contemporary games.
The enjoyment derived from playing Zoo earned it a well-deserved place in MSX popularity rankings. It was released in both Japan and Europe, becoming one of the most widely played MSX games from its era.
