In Return of the Incredible Machine: Contraptions, il gameplay è praticamente identico ai precedenti giochi della serie. I giocatori devono usare una serie di componenti meccanici (quasi esattamente lo stesso set di The Incredible Machine 3) per creare un dispositivo tipo Rube Goldberg che compia un obiettivo specifico (come far scoppiare un palloncino). Ci sono circa 250 puzzle da risolvere, insieme a una modalità di costruzione di invenzioni in forma libera e una modalità testa a testa per due giocatori.
