Ace Ball was released for the Amiga home computer in 1995. Developed by Team17, it is a satisfyingly fast take on the classic game of Breakout. In Ace Ball, the player takes control of a yellow ball which ricochets around the screen, eradicating coloured blocks in its path. Players are aided in their quest by a trusty in-game paddle - the only means of controlling the ball’s direction.
The ball’s rapid speed tests the player’s dexterity and makes for manic and exhilarating gameplay. As the ball snipes at the blocky terrain, it often sends out an array of special objects such as additional balls and power-ups that provide an array of helpful bonuses. Sometimes, an extra life can be gained if the player manages to collect a few of these power-ups quickly enough.
Team17 streamlined the classic formula of Breakout, keeping the action fast-paced and introducing several innovations that would later become the template for clone games. These include a multi-level system, where the difficulty gradually ratchets up, as well as the bandit-style enemy barriers that emerge to trouble the player’s progress.
Probably the most intriguing component of Ace Ball, however, is the sheer range of levels the player is presented with. Boasting a total of ninety-six distinct stages, the game rewards the player’s hard-earned dexterity with a wide selection of colorful environments. Each one yields a unique challenge; from the neon-lit nocturnal rooms to sinister underwater levels.
Ace Ball presents a timeless gaming experience, ripe with challenging stages, galvanic action, and a sharp sense of nostalgia. Oh, and anyway, it is great fun!
