Aces of the Deep

Aces of the Deep is a video game in the simulation genre developed by Dynamix, Inc. and published by Sierra On-Line, Inc. originally released in 1994. It is currently playable on DOS.

Take command of one of seven WWII German U-boats and pursue and destroy Allied convoys. This is never an easy task, as their escorts and planes are waiting to ruin your day. The level of realism, and with it the difficulty, can be set by activating or deactivating ten options, e. g. unlimited ammunition, clear vision or even invulnerability.

Campaigns can be started in one of several time slots, allowing you to play throughout the war if you wish. During these campaigns you earn medals and promotions including command of better submarines. You can also choose to play a single mission in which you can set certain variables, for example, the number of ships or weather conditions. Specific missions are not necessary because the engine 'rolls up' convoys and targets, which means that each time you play the missions will change. The type and location of these missions depend on the historical weather and the submarine used.

The submarine consists of several rooms where you can access the functions and instruments you will need, for example, the logbook in the captain's room or the fuel and battery gauge in the engine room. However, the most important functions can be activated at any time, including the sea map where the waypoints are set. The crew can take over certain tasks, such as ship identification.

The CD-ROM version adds additional multimedia features: video interviews with German submariners, an online manual providing detailed information on the historical background and tactics of the U-boats, as well as historical maps, films, photos and articles.
