Aliard's Tome

Aliard's Tome is a video game in the adventure genre and published by Romik Software Ltd originally released in 1983. It is currently playable on Commodore 64.

Years ago, a quest attempted by you, Malhek, in the Demonic Dungeons of Cail had gone wrong and as you were preparing to die you were rescued. The wizard Aliard had entered the dungeons with his Tome of Magic Spells and managed to find you and bring you back outside to safety. The problem is that the Tome was dropped and lost and now, years later, with Aliard aging and weakening, the Tome is needed to cast the Spell of Rebirth to save Aliard's life. As thanks for your rescue, you are sworn to enter the dungeons once more to retrieve the book, but the monsters and creatures are stronger and where once there were lanterns lighting the way, they have all gone out leaving the place in darkness.

Aliard's Tome is a text adventure in which the screen has text describing each place you visit and you type commands with the keyboard to interact with your environment. Since the dungeon is dark, you get a brief glimpse of each room and the objects there before the text disappears, but finding matches allows you to take another look at each room when it's lit up. You also have to keep an eye on your health, which slowly decreases as you explore, but you can find items to increase it. You can carry various items, but carrying more than 40 pounds decreases your health faster.
