Description Alien Odyssey

Alien Odyssey is a fun but little-known action game from Argonaut Software that is similar to Cyberia in concept: it has action, flight simulation, adventure, and full motion video (FMV) sequences, all on one entertaining CD.

The game puts you in the shoes of Psaph Abal, a member of a race from the future whose ship has been stranded on a distant planet. Upon emerging from the wreck, you encounter a strange alien being pursued by some evil-looking robots. Sensing that the robots are the bad guys, you hop on a motorcycle and start shooting at the robots with your laser gun, while chasing the alien to rescue him. . . . . The motorcycle chase through the forest is a lot of fun, although it's an 'on-rails shooter' sequence (think Rebel Assault) that limits your movement to moving the crosshead and shooting the bad guys. However, the gorgeous graphics and good variety make this part fun: the path you take is never the same, and there are countless movie clips to discover. Too bad the later sections of the game aren't as well done, though they're still interesting enough to keep my interest. The 3D part of the game features adventure-style puzzle solving interspersed with real-time combat sequences to keep the excitement going, and the driving part towards the end reminds me of Descent, but with 360-degree freedom of movement.

Overall, I had a lot of fun with Alien Odyssey, even if it is cheesy and cliché and too easy. The FMVs are fun and there's enough variety to keep you engaged, though it's ultimately too linear (like Cyberia) to justify extensive replayability.
