Armada

Armada is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Turcan Research Systems Limited and published by ARC originally released in 1989. It is currently playable on DOS, Amiga.

Armada is the first naval warfare game in an unrelated series of isometric perspective real-time wargames by Peter Turcan. Unfortunately, it is also the most obscure due to a much more limited distribution than his previous games. As one veteran wargamer observes in his pithy review of the game: '[Armada is] a British product . . . [which] covers the defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588) by a motley crew of English adventurers, opportunists and patriots. Using a 'commander's point of view' and typed commands, it was somewhat difficult to learn the basic system, but presented a unique perspective'.

Overall, Armada is an interesting application of the land-based game engine used in Borodino 1812 to naval battles, but is probably still too 'dry' and clunky for the average wargamer. Still, Turcan's second game based on this system, Dreadnoughts, improves on its spiritual predecessor in many ways, so you might want to check it out.
