Ashen

Ashen, a game for the N-Gage released in 2004, blended tactical combat gaming with a compelling story to create an ultimately rewarding narrative experience. Players found themselves stepping into the shoes of a brave protagonist known simply as "The Exile", who must fight against a powerful force, the Corruptors. The invasion of the Corruptors into their home threats the Exile and their allies, an underground resistance known as the "Sons of Urth".

This blend of action-RPG, tactics and story gave Ashen a unique presence on the N-Gage. The game provided an exciting mixture of light and shadow, pitting the bright colourful visuals of a fantasy world against a hidden darkness as the Corruptors push their way into the world. Combat is the core of the game, with the player able to build a powerful team of allies and hire mercenaries in order to take on the Corruptors. Through a range of tactics, techniques, and strategies, the player must battle through a series of levels in order to ultimately reclaim their world.

The story in Ashen also received much acclaim. The writing featured multiple plot strands, character development, and memorable villains, with a great variety and scope of locations within the fantasy world of the game. There are also multiple choices to be made in the game, allowing for multiple playthroughs, and a great freedom for the player to craft their own version of the story.

Ashen ultimately proved to be a popular title, thanks to its mix of challenging tactics and engaging storytelling. The game provided a great experience, drawing players in and leaving them wanting more. Even more than a decade later, the game still holds up and continues to be enjoyed by gamers looking for that perfect blend of action, story, and tactical combat.
