Made in the heyday of SEGA's sprite scaling hardware (After Burner, Out Run) in the arcades, Galaxy Force is a combination of After Burner and G-Loc R-360 set in space.
The game is divided into four 'scenes', or planets: world A is a green planet, world B is a lava planet with fire, world C is a green water planet and world D is a barren ice planet. You have to pilot your spaceship over the planet's surface, facing not only waves of Space Harrier-style enemy attacks, but also natural phenomena such as meteors, lava eruptions and tornadoes. To fight them off, you have a vulcanizer and an inexhaustible supply of missiles.
Once you have made your way through the planet, you enter a tunnel system in the inner reaches of the planet. As the tunnel turns, you are given directions on which direction to maneuver, but the narrow tunnel gives you little room for evasive action. Once you escape the tunnel, the entire planet is destroyed, leading you to the final boss encounter.
