Atari 8-bit gamers were met with quite the unique challenge in 1989 when the game Robot Karel was released. With a maze-like level design and two-player cooperative action, the game was a tantalizing prospect.
The main character, Karel, was made up of a robot body and two simple levers for arms and legs. The aim was to lead Karel through a series of mazes and obstacles to the exit at the end. Along each stage, Karel had to collect bonus points which increased his score. The player had to manipulate the levers of both arms and legs of Karel as he moved along the map.
The game featured a total of five levels, each with its own layout and obstacles. Each level has its own speed settings, making it more difficult for the player to navigate through. As the game progresses, Karel would have to face various monsters which block the path to the exit. The player had to outsmart the monsters in order to go through the level. However, the player had the help of Karel’s electronic brain to think of strategies that could help him get through the game.
The game did not feature any artificial intelligence, so the player had to rely on his or her own problem solving abilities in order to finish the game. Robot Karel had a two-player cooperative mode so two players could take on the role of Karel and go through the game together, sharing in the experience.
The game was met with positive reviews, with praise for its creative level design and puzzle solving. It was an intriguing and gratifying challenge for any Atari 8-bit enthusiast. Robot Karel represented a true test of one's problem-solving capabilities, and provided hours of entertainment for players of all ages.
