Atari's Astro-Droid is a truly unique 8-bit game, released in 1987. Players find themselves in the cockpit of a rocket-powered space ship that has been infiltrated by aliens. The player must control their rocket and navigate through treacherous asteroid fields while simultaneously attempting to fend off hostile aliens. The objective of the game is to maneuver the rocket ship through the asteroid field and blast any hostile aliens that appear on-screen.
The game begins with the ship slowly advancing down a winding asteroid tunnel as aliens suddenly appear at various points. The ship must be rapidly maneuvered around the sharp curves and sudden meteor storms that occur in the tunnel. During this thrilling adventure, the player must gun down the aliens attacking them, while avoiding their cries and bullets that zip by all too quickly.
Players must use every tool they have available to ensure their survival in this hostile environment. Gamers have access to a shield that can absorb some of the impacts from hostile fire. The on-board computer also displays the remaining fuel gauge, which tells playershowmuch longer they can remain in the tunnel before their fuel runs out, effectively ending their mission. The game also provides a map, which shows the locations of enemy ships, and will warn the player of approaching meteors.
Players must be strategic in their navigation of the tunnel, as navigation can have consequences that could ultimately lead to their demise. One wrong move could send a ship careening off course, with little hope of return. A fast and precise hand is a must if one is to survive their trip through the treacherous passageways.
