BMX Rekencross is a video game in the educational genre developed by Vifi International and published by N.V. Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken originally released in 1984. It is currently playable on MSX.
In 1984, Hudson Soft shook up the gaming industry with the release of BMX Rekencross. This classic side-scrolling obstacle course game captivated players from the beginning with its vivid graphics, energetic soundtrack, and challenging levels. Players assume the role of a BMX rider taking on an endless obstacle course of jumps, bumps, and tricks.
Competing against the clock, the goal of the game was to minimize the time taken to reach the end of the course and obtain the highest score while ensuring the quality of tricks remained high to get the most points. Players navigated the course using the directional buttons on either side of the controller, pulling off stunts to avoid hitting obstacles.
Players also had access to different power-ups that allowed them to fly higher, land faster, and complete tricks with more flair. The more daring of riders could even gain extra points by collecting power-up coins scattered throughout each level. The trick is that they would disappear when the player stopped so collecting these coins was only viable by completing stunts and tricks across the course.
Away from the obstacles, BMX Rekencross was filled with surprises. Players could compete in seven different courses, with each containing its own hazards such as fireflies, snake holes, and other creatures. It also included a championship mode, where players could compete against the CPU or even three friends in a four-player battle.
The game featured various difficulty levels, allowing gamers of all skill levels to enjoy the challenge of BMX Rekencross. Despite its age, the game is still beloved by those who experienced it. For modern gamers, it serves as a nostalgic reminder of the golden days of gaming, while those with newer consoles can try it out for the first time and experience a classic game of the past.
