Caverunner is a video game in the action genre and published by English Software Company, The originally released in 1983. It is currently playable on Atari 8-bit.
Caverunner is a classic 8-bit game that was released by Atari in 1983. Where many other Atari 8-bit titles often centered around outer space and action games, Caverunner was a significant departure. In this game, players took on the role of an adventurer exploring a subterranean cavern. The General premise was to collect as many gems as possible while progressing through the cave network.
The graphics were rather basic compared to today's technology, but the concepts were quite advanced for the time. The game featured a unique user interface, using arrows at the edges of the screen to scroll the map horizontally and vertically. The player would be given a map of the cave in which they were navigating and the player had to decipher the location of exits and treasures. The map also changed as players progressed throught the game.
The gameplay certainly posed a challenge. The character could move or jump in four directions and could shoot arrows to remove enemies. The player could also select a laser beam, to navigate through the cave. To make things more difficult, the levels featured periodic time constraints, to make sure the player stayed on track. As an interesting twist, the game also featured areas with a higher gravity, as well as items that changed the laws of physics.
Careful use of items and navigation through the caves was key to success in Caverunner. As an extra bonus, the game included several kinds of enemies, each with their own unique challenge. However, the player was given three lives and could discover life-extending items to continue their progress.
Caverunner remains an exciting and creative game, even now, decades after its release. The inventory of items, array of enemies and ingenious puzzles all come together to make an exciting and unique experience. Those who embark on a subterranean quest searching for hidden treasures will find themselves drawn into the depths of this captivating Atari 8-Bit title.
