Columns is a video game in the action genre developed by ESP Soft and published by Computer Emuzone Games Studio originally released in 2006. It is currently playable on ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC.
Columns is a fast-paced puzzle game for the ZX Spectrum in which the player clears crystal formations by matching falling gems in vertical, horizontal, and diagonal alignments. Play takes place in a glowing shaft of stacked columns where a pair of colored pieces descends under gravity. Each new pair is introduced at the top of the grid, ready to be positioned before it locks into place, building up to ever-tighter patterns.
Control is simple and immediate. The player shifts the falling pair left or right, then rotates it to choose the arrangement before dropping. Once the pair lands, the game checks for any groups of three or more matching gems that form a line; these are removed and the surrounding crystals settle downward to fill gaps. Cleared sections can trigger cascades when additional sets form as pieces fall, rewarding careful planning with higher scores and rapid streaks.
The setting is rendered as an abstract, crystal-lit chamber, with each color representing a distinct element of the gem set. The objective remains consistent: keep the playfield from filling up to the top while working toward efficient clears. As the game progresses, the pace intensifies with quicker consecutive pair drops and more complex board states, turning the puzzle into a balancing act between immediate line clearing and long-term positioning.
Visually, Columns uses the ZX Spectrum’s characteristic pixel-art style, with bright, blocky gem sprites against a darker grid backdrop. The playfield is defined by clear column boundaries, while matched gems flash and vanish to show the exact moment a line is completed. Motion is conveyed through the steady stepwise descent of pieces, and rotations are shown by swapping the pair’s layout inside the grid before it settles.
Sound accompanies the action with short chiptune motifs and responsive effect cues. Rotating and dropping pieces produces crisp tones, and successful clears generate celebratory blips as crystals disappear. When chain reactions occur, the audio escalates in intensity, matching the visual cascade and reinforcing the sense of momentum as the board reshapes itself under pressure.
