Gameplay Defender II

Description Defender II

Defender II (also known as Stargate) adds to the already established gameplay of Williams' arcade classic, Defender.
The important distinction that sets this game apart from its predecessor is that, first, vertical control is done with the mouse, with the mouse button acting as a thruster, allowing the player to reverse the direction of movement.

The game is divided into four sectors of 16 different waves, each of which consists of a thematic mission or wave and three regular attack waves. There are eight mission waves, in which the player must complete the objectives specified at the beginning of the wave, and eight thematic waves, in which the player encounters hordes of specific types of enemies.

The game begins with your ship equipped with lasers and smart bombs, and an AI drone that moves with your ship and boosts its firepower with lasers. In addition, the drone is replaced by special weapons, such as a more powerful 'toothpaste' laser, bomb pods that destroy the ground, shots that head diagonally upwards, and smart lasers that shoot out of the ship in all directions like lightning bolts to kill enemies. All special weapons have a limited duration and are recharged every 10. 000 points for reuse. A variety of new enemies have also been added, and the graphics have been updated to the standards of the time.

Airships fly over rugged planetary landscapes on a mission to protect humanoids from evil alien attacks. Players control their aircraft through a two-way scrolling landscape, eliminating different types of aliens and preventing humanoids from being abducted. If the alien manages to take out the humanoid into space (top of the screen), it will mutate and chase your ship. You can rescue the humanoid by shooting the captured alien, but if it falls too far, the impact will kill it. To avoid this, the player must swoop down, pick it up and return it safely to the surface. The surface stargate can also be used to instantly move to another location if the humanoid is in danger. At the end of each wave of attacks, each surviving humanoid gives you an extra score, and the humanoid population is reset after each sector. At the top of the screen is a long-range scanner that shows the location of all enemies and humanoids in the level.

Defender and Stargate versions are also included, with a choice of either the original graphics or updated to match those of Defender II.
