Disposable Hero
This horizontally scrolling R-Type influenced shooter features 5 levels that you must traverse, with bosses at the end of each level, as well as difficult mini-bosses as you traverse them. There are four difficulty levels, with the easiest being the one that serves as a trainer, as you can't reach the final level or complete the game correctly with it. You can customize the exact volume of the music and sound effects, and there are many subtle visual effects, such as a haze of smoke billowing from your ship as it takes damage.
The game's power-up system is worth mentioning. Rather than just collecting new weapons, or general purpose tokens that can be swapped out with the press of a button, you collect blueprints for a total of 32 different weapons, as well as upgrades for the maximum amount of power your ship can unleash at a time. Once you reach a power-up bay (which are represented as blue domes at the base of the level), you can add or remove weapons to maximize your attack capabilities.
Flimbo's Quest
Flimbo's Quest, released in 1991, is a classic adventure game for the Commodore 64 that continues to hold a special place in the hearts of gamers. Developed by the Swedish company System 3, this platformer follows the story of a small creature named Flimbo on a quest to save his home from the evil Baron Bold. With its vibrant graphics, catchy soundtrack, and challenging gameplay, Flimbo's Quest became an instant hit upon its release.
The game takes players through a variety of imaginative and colorful levels, each with its own set of obstacles and enemies to overcome. From the treetops of the forest to the depths of the ocean, Flimbo's journey is filled with adventure and surprises at every turn. Players must navigate through these levels, using Flimbo's unique abilities such as jumping and shooting, to collect coins and power-ups while avoiding danger.
One of the most notable aspects of Flimbo's Quest is its stunning graphics. Despite being released in the early 90s, the game boasts vibrant and detailed visuals that still hold up today. Each level is beautifully designed with its own distinct theme, creating a visually dynamic experience for players. Additionally, the character designs are cute and charming, adding to the game's overall appeal.
The game's soundtrack is another standout feature, composed by the talented Reyn Ouwehand. Each level has its own musical theme that perfectly captures the tone and atmosphere of the environment. The upbeat and catchy melodies add to the game's charm and make the gameplay experience even more enjoyable.
Flimbo's Quest may seem like a simple platformer at first glance, but the gameplay is anything but easy. The game is notorious for its difficulty, with challenging level designs and enemies that require precise timing and strategy to defeat. This level of difficulty adds an element of satisfaction for players who successfully navigate through each level and defeat Baron Bold.
Aside from its gameplay and design, Flimbo's Quest also has an interesting backstory. According to the game's manual, Flimbo's home, the Rainbow Island, was once a peaceful place until the evil Baron Bold and his army of robots invaded. With the help of the player, Flimbo sets out to defeat Baron Bold, reclaim his home, and restore peace to the Rainbow Island.
