Total Eclipse

Total Eclipse takes its basic concept from Elite (which was never ported to Dragon), but shifts the focus from real-time spaceflight to aspects of trading and navigation. The game unfolds through a series of graphical menus, coupled with 3D and 2D action sequences. It takes place in a universe composed of 12 galaxies divided into 10 sectors of 36 squares (a total of 4. 320 squares). Despite taking place in space, the galaxy map is two-dimensional. The squares can contain empty space, space stations, planets, asteroids, hyperports, black holes and abandoned space cruisers. You start on a space station, which offers resupply and repair services, as well as investments (recommended for wealthy players only). Planets vary in technological level and political system. Inexperienced players should avoid traveling to lawless planets. Although all planets offer facilities for trading and refueling, services such as repairs and spare parts (as well as the type of spare parts) depend on the technological level of the planets. This also governs the range of goods on the stock market, and their prices. Asteroids can be mined for asteroil, a highly sought-after substance that can be traded on stations. Hyperways facilitate travel to other galaxies. Black holes are generally dangerous and should be avoided, although the manual hints at other possibilities. Derelict space cruisers can be visited to claim salvage money. To do this, you must enter the ship, find the bridge, get the captain's log and return to your ship before the self-destruct sequence is activated. Using the short scanner, you can scan 36 cells in your proximity and identify their contents. Each scan consumes your computer's energy level, which eventually causes the operation to fail. Therefore, it is necessary to recharge your computer just as you recharge your ship. Upgrading the RAM of your ship's computer activates the long-range scanner, which allows a larger scan radius and thus a larger radius of operation, since all trips are initiated from the scanner menu. Another RAM upgrade opens the data scanner menu, which can scan an entire galaxy at once. When you arrive on a planet, pirates may try to extort protection money from you. If you don't pay, the pirates will attack you in space, in a 3D view where you will have to move the crosshairs to try to shoot down the attacking ships. In case the enemy is at an advantage, you can try to run away from them or, alternatively, attempt a panic hyper-jump, which instantly moves you to a random position in another part of the galaxy, with a 66 6% chance of survival. Destroying a pirate ship will release its cargo into space, which will be transported to your ship. Due to space limitations, the system of Total Eclipse cannot be described in more detail, although it is at least as complicated as Elite.
