Dinosaur Discovery Kit

DOS 1990
Dinosaur Discovery Kit, released in 1990, was a groundbreaking DOS game that took players back in time to explore the world of dinosaurs. Developed by Brøderbund Software, this educational game was a pioneer in its category, combining fun gameplay with informative content. The game starts with an introduction to the Mesozoic era, where players are given the role of a paleontologist tasked with discovering and cataloging various species of dinosaurs. The graphics, although simple by today's standards, were impressive for its time. The dinosaurs were depicted with detailed illustrations, and the landscapes were rich with lush plants and scenery. The gameplay was divided into various activities, including excavation, lab work, and a museum building. In the excavation section, players had to use tools like brushes, shovels, and picks to uncover dinosaur bones buried in the ground. The lab work involved cleaning and assembling the bones, which required precise movements and attention to detail. The museum building allowed players to display their findings in a virtual museum, complete with information on each dinosaur species. One of the most notable features of Dinosaur Discovery Kit was its educational aspect. The game included a database of over 200 different dinosaurs, each with its facts and descriptions. Players could also access in-game resources such as maps, charts, and timelines to further enhance their knowledge of dinosaurs. This made the game not only entertaining but also a valuable learning tool for children and adults alike. Moreover, Dinosaur Discovery Kit also had a variety of mini-games that added to the overall experience. These included a quiz game to test players' knowledge, a scavenger hunt to locate hidden dinosaur fossils, and a time-trial game where players had to race against the clock to unearth bones. These games provided a fun and interactive way to reinforce the educational content of the game. The soundtrack of the game also deserves mention as it added to the immersive atmosphere. With ambient sounds of nature and chilling roars of dinosaurs, the music was a perfect fit for the game's theme. It created an engaging and realistic environment, making players feel like real paleontologists on a thrilling adventure.

Eco-Saurus

DOS 1991
Eco-Saurus is an excellent edutainment title from First Byte. Designed to teach children about environmental conservation, you will join the friendly dinosaur Zug as an Environmental Conservation Officer (E. C. O. ) on a mission to save Eco Island and rescue his alien friend M-Kar. By conserving energy and collecting recyclable materials from the local inhabitants, you will help restore Eco Island, rebuild M-Kar's spaceship and provide him with enough energy for his flight home. The game is very easy to learn: just use the mouse to pick up the garbage on each screen and place it in the appropriate recycling garbage can (or just throw the garbage away if it is not recyclable). You'll meet many colorful inhabitants of Eco Island, each of whom can even talk, albeit with a sound similar to the robots in Sound Blaster's first Dr. Sbaitso. Kids will be drawn in by the fun gameplay, the funny cartoon dinosaurs and the very nice VGA graphics. The game could have used a deeper database, but as a title developed for the very young (preschool and elementary level), Eco-Saurus has the right balance of education and fun to keep kids glued to the screen.
