Code-Name: Iceman
At the beginning of the 21st century, the Earth is suffering from a global oil shortage. Surprisingly, Tunisia remains one of the few countries that still possesses large quantities of high quality oil. The governments of the United States and the Soviet Union compete with each other in their attempts to buy as much oil as possible. Finally, the Soviets go a step further and kidnap the U. S. ambassador, hoping to provoke an international incident. Naval officer Johnny Westland is sent to Tunisia with orders to rescue the ambassador and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
Code-Name: Iceman is primarily an adventure game similar to other Sierra works in that genre. The player navigates the protagonist in eight different directions from the third-person view, and types text commands to interact with the environment. The 'Look' command can be typed separately and result in different text descriptions depending on where the protagonist is on the screen. The game is similar to the Police Quest series in that it is based on realistic procedures, in this case military instructions, first aid, and so on. The player may hit dead ends and resort to restoring a previous save if some of these procedures are not followed correctly. In addition, a considerable part of the game consists of the simulation of a submarine, which requires the player to navigate in it and fight against enemy ships.
Conquests of Camelot: The Search for the Grail
It is the ninth century, and Camelot, the legendary castle ruled by King Arthur, has fallen under a curse. Famine and drought plague the kingdom because of a love triangle between the king, his wife Gwenhyver and the knight Launcelot. It seems that only the mysterious Holy Grail can restore Camelot, and three knights - Launcelot, Gawaine and Galahad - embark on a journey to find it, and soon disappear without a trace. King Arthur sets out from his castle in search of the missing knights, hoping to find the Grail as well. His quest takes him to royal and mythical places in England, and later to Jerusalem and other parts of the Holy Land.
Conquests of Camelot is an adventure game that requires the player to enter text commands, mostly combining verbs and objects (such as 'look man', 'get bag', etc.). Some commands (such as 'ask for') have keyboard shortcuts. Unlike most adventure games, the game does not focus too much on inventory-based puzzles. Instead, it presents a varied range of tasks depending on specific situations. These involve exploration, puzzle solving, information gathering, participation in arcade sequences such as jousting, and others. Rudimentary money management is also present.
Many problems have different solutions, and it is possible to reach the final part of the game even without having completed some of the essential quests (e.g., not saving the knights). However, Arthur is judged by the game in three different categories: skill (referring to the action sequences), wisdom (evaluating the amount of cultural information collected) and soul (determining the moral value of Arthur's action). Failure to score high in the last category results in a bad ending.
The game is set in a specific historical period, but adds an alternate reality to it, assuming that pagan deities actually existed, but were overshadowed by Christian worship. However, there are only a few references to actual religious practices of the time or to any historical figures.
Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood
Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood, released in 1991, is a hallmark of adventure gaming developed by Sierra On-Line. Set in the captivating world of medieval England, the game narrates the legendary tales of Robin Hood and his band of merry men. Players step into the shoes of this iconic outlaw, engaging in a quest not only for justice but also for romance and camaraderie. The interactive narrative unfolds through elegant graphics, engaging puzzles, and a richly woven plot that pays homage to the tales passed down through generations.
One of the remarkable aspects of this title is its emphasis on moral choices. The game's structure leads players through various scenarios, where their decisions influence the storyline's outcome. This feature immerses players deeper into the role of Robin Hood, forcing them to weigh the implications of their actions on the lives of friends and foes alike. This depth enhances the gameplay experience, drawing players into an intricate web of loyalties, betrayals, and the struggles of the downtrodden. The duality of justice vs. selfishness is palpable throughout, making each choice feel significant.
The gameplay is enriched by the unique mechanics introduced in Conquests of the Longbow. Players must navigate both combat scenarios and problem-solving challenges that range from simple tasks to complex riddles. The use of archery, a defining skill of Robin Hood, is thoughtfully integrated, offering a blend of action and strategy. This engaging combination encourages players to seamlessly shift between planning their next move and executing it with precision, thereby maintaining a high level of excitement and engagement.
Visually, the game showcases the 16-color Sierra graphics style, creating a whimsical yet atmospheric interpretation of Sherwood Forest and its vibrant characters. Character animations breathe life into the various personas, from the scheming Prince John to the cunning Maid Marian. Coupled with a charming musical score that reinforces the game's medieval ambiance, Conquests of the Longbow establishes a rich sensory environment that lingers in the minds of players long after they’ve put down the keyboard.
What truly sets this game apart is its dedication to immersing players in the Robin Hood mythos. It’s not merely an adventure; it’s a quest for righteousness and adventure filled with historical and folklore elements. The nuanced portrayal of relationships, combined with a protagonist who is both relatable and aspirational, creates a sense of connection that transcends the gameplay itself. For fans of interactive storytelling, Conquests of the Longbow remains a timeless classic, resonating with those who seek adventure rooted in meaningful choices and rich narrative. Its legacy continues to inspire game developers and enthusiasts alike, ensuring that the spirit of Robin Hood endures through the ages.
