Avernum

Windows 2000
Avernum is a remake of Exile, Spiderweb Software's first game. It uses the Nethergate game engine and plays very similarly. However, a few things have been improved. Instead of just clicking on the topics players want to know more about in conversations, and getting static data as a response, they can now select from several options what they want to say. It's a more natural system, like in Ultima Underworld. Combat has not changed significantly, except that there are new weapons, and many more spells, than in previous games, and these have altered graphics. Sprite animation has been expanded and additional frames have been added to the character animations. The isometric tile-to-tile scrolling view has not changed, but the numerous added frames will help improve combat.

Avernum 2

Windows 2001
Avernum 2 is a revision of Exile 2: Crystal Souls. This version uses an improved Nethergate engine and adds new spells, quests, characters, classes and other things. Conversations have changed from asking about a play to get an answer to asking preset questions. The effect is a more natural conversation like in a game like Baldur's Gate or other similar RPGs. If you are not familiar with Exile 2: The Crystal Souls, you play as a group of adventurers. Your duty is to make sure you help the ancient Vahnatai and ensure peace between your two peoples. Your people, the Exiles, need your help to defeat the invading forces of the Empire.

Avernum 3

Windows 2002
Avernum 3 is the third installment in the Avernum series and is a revision of Exile 3: Ruined World. In it, you create a party of 1 to 4 characters and play as one of the first gangs to return to the surface after years of exile in the prison caves of Avernum. Instead of the paradise you expected, you find a world stricken by disease and plagued by monsters. The game is very open-ended, and your party can try to save the world or simply settle down and live out their days as merchants.

Avernum 6

Windows 2010
Avernum 6 is a fantasy role-playing game that was released in 2010. This game was the final installment in the Avernum series, developed and published by Spiderweb Software. Set in a vast underground world, players take on the role of a group of adventurers tasked with saving the citizens of Avernum from a powerful tyrant. The game boasts an immersive storyline, filled with political intrigue and unexpected plot twists. Avernum 6 offers players a vast open-world to explore, with over 400 different locations to discover. These locations range from bustling cities to ancient ruins, each with their own unique challenges and secrets to uncover. One of the most notable features of Avernum 6 is the level of customization it offers players. From creating your own characters to choosing your party members, players can truly make the game their own. The game also offers a variety of skills and abilities for characters to acquire, allowing for a diverse set of playstyles and strategies. The combat in Avernum 6 is turn-based and highly strategic. Players must carefully plan out their moves and take advantage of their party's abilities in order to defeat enemies. The game also features a variety of different enemy types, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, adding to the challenge and complexity of battles. Furthermore, Avernum 6 also features a multitude of side quests and optional dungeons, ensuring that players will always have something to do and explore. These side quests also offer valuable rewards, such as powerful weapons and rare items, making them worth the time and effort. The game's graphics and sound design are another highlight, immersing players in the underground world of Avernum. The vibrant and detailed environments, along with the sweeping orchestral soundtrack, add to the overall immersive experience of the game.

Avernum IV

Windows 2006
Avernum 4 puts you in charge of a group of 4 characters, whose task is to discover why your homeland of Avernum has been suffering from a series of unnatural disasters. The game uses a modified version of the Geneforge engine, which means that its interface is completely different from previous Avernum games. Although the character images are the same (the ones that appear on the inventory screen), the graphics used for the characters in the game are different. This also applies to the graphics used for the enemies. The game is played with the mouse and the keyboard, with the former being the main means of control and the latter providing the hotkeys. Thus, movement, interaction with objects, combat and dialogues are controlled with the mouse, although the game can be configured so that the keyboard is also used for movement. Combat is a standard, turn-based affair. Each character has a finite number of action points that are spent on melee or ranged attacks, movement or spell casting.

Avernum V

Windows 2008
Everything was prosperous and peaceful in the Empire, until recently. Someone tried to assassinate the Empress... but who would dare such a thing and to what end? The answer to the mystery may lie in the rebel Dorikas, who has fled to the subway realm of Avernum. A group of four brave heroes must pursue Dorikas underground, solve the mystery and restore order to the land. Avernum V is an isometric role-playing game in the tradition of Ultima, Fallout and previous Avernum games. Create a party of four characters of different races, classes, skills and traits and explore a vast subway territory. Exploration and menu navigation is done with the mouse, with optional hotkey controls. The combat mode is turn-based, with each party member having a set number of action points for movement, melee...

Blades of Avernum

Windows 2004
The fourth role-playing game in the Avernum series. Create a party of four heroes and set out for one of the four scenarios: The Valley of Death: Explore the world of magic and sorcery and find the secret of the mysterious plague. A small rebellion: A group of rebels has formed against the empire, will you fight them or join them? Find your way through a dangerous river and try to save your allies on the other side before time runs out. Diplomacy with the dead: Help a small town fight against a powerful vampire.

Blades of Exile

This is the latest game in the Exile series. However, it is not a continuation of the plot of the series, but a program that allows you to create your own Exile games, although it includes three pre-made scenarios.

Exile II: Crystal Souls

Exile 2 plays very similarly to the first Exile, with skill-based characters and level advancement in a 'classic' RPG system. The view is top-down, with turn-based combat and plenty of items to hoard and use, along with plenty of mage and cleric spells. In addition to the human members of the party, the player can choose to be joined by one of the 'tamed' races, including the rodent Nephil and reptilian Slith. In Exile 2, the land of Exile, a subway system of caverns used by the Overland Empire to flush out undesirables, faces several problems: after the group's actions in Exile 1, the Empire has decided that the nation of Exile is too dangerous to leave alone, and begins sending raiding parties and troops of its best soldiers into the caverns. In addition to this threat, strange impenetrable barriers have begun to appear over the land, restricting vital areas of it. Your group sets out to stop the threat from the Empire and find the source of the barriers.

Exile III: Ruined World
