Basketball Challenge
Building on their solid simulation model used in NFL Challenge, XOR released Basketball Challenge 2 years later, with even less fanfare than the original. However, don't let the lack of recognition fool you: Basketball Challenge is a great stats-based simulation of the sport that will provide many hours of entertainment for armchair coaches, despite the lack of attractive graphics.
Like NFL Challenge, you can play against the computer, against a friend, or watch the computer play itself. There are plenty of plays to choose from, and fouls are handled effectively in the game. One of the things I like most about the game is the pre-match options, which allow you to view team profiles (with comments on their strengths and weaknesses, and who the star players are), as well as comparing the teams' strengths. There are 3 levels of difficulty, from easy to hard, although even the easy level will prove challenging for many players, as the computer plays very well.
Before anyone has any doubts, let me emphasize that Basketball Challenge is a 100% text game - players are represented as numbers moving on the screen, with comments at the bottom. This is more than appropriate, as the emphasis of the game is on realism and coaching options, not arcade controls.
With solid AI and great gameplay, Basketball Challenge is highly recommended for all armchair coaches. The lack of a career/tournament mode and the absence of NBA endorsement are the only things missing from the game.
