Description Exile

Exile was a sci-fi action-adventure video game developed and released by Audiogenic for the Commodore 64 in 1991. The title was designed and programmed by Andrew Tilley, and featured a relentless and quite ambitious science-fiction narrative set in a hostile and alternate future.

Exile's architecture revolved around a unique one-character system, in which the player character, a cyborg, traverses an interstellar minefield controlled by hostile aliens. The objectives of the game involved the rescue of numerous hostages scattered throughout the intergalactic space, while dodging hostile enemies, aliens, traps, and all sorts of other obstacles.

The game was complemented by a visually pleasing soundscape, featuring atmospheric music and assorted audio cues during the game's multiple levels. In addition, Exile contained a distinct but detailed art direction, which included distinct, sci-fi-inspired textures and colors.

Gameplay was intense and the controls were solid. The player character could employ a number of weapons such as heat-seekers, laser guns, and missiles which enabled them to attack enemies. The game's difficulty varied depending upon the level of each mission, as well as the particular outcome.

Exile garnered a positive reception upon release, with most citing its detailed graphics and strong narrative. It also garnered a special mention from Edge magazine for its intense and innovative structure and impressive level of replayability.

Exile stands out to this day as one of the best Commodore 64 games in its genre, an astonishing work of space-based science-fiction narrative. It stands as a testament to the Commodore 64's capabilities and to how well-rounded a sci-fi action-adventure experience can be on this classic platform.
