Description Front Lines

Front Lines is a hypothetical wargame that closely resembles QQP's venerable The Perfect General series, combining the elements of board game warfare with good graphics and sound.

Set in the next century, the game simulates ground combat at the tactical level, focusing on armor and infantry. One of the strengths of Front Lines is the variety of gameplay options. The game includes dozens of pre-built, challenging scenarios for one or two players, as well as a full-featured scenario builder and editor that you can use to design your own battlefield.

Gameplay-wise, Front Lines falls somewhere in between The Perfect General and Blue Byte's Battle Isle series: it's not as realistic as The Perfect General, but it gives more nods to realism than Battle Isle. The catalog-style vehicle descriptions are excellent and even instructive for the casual war gamer. The movement and combat interface system is easy to use with realistic battle segments. The game is not a quick race to victory, but an exercise in small unit tactics with a high level of detail. The computer tracks hidden units, elevation, line of sight, target strength, distance and much more.

Overall, an excellent design that is ideal for beginner and intermediate wargamers. However, faulty AI and questionable realism mean that expert wargamers should turn to Norm Koger's Red Lightning for their realistic hypothetical wargaming solution. It's not as good as The Perfect General, but it's a good attempt. Recommended.
