Description Gorgon
The one-player game is set in a castle and focuses on dragons and dragon slaying. The castle is a labyrinth of four levels with teleports such as stairs, ladders, and hallways. Walls, floors, and ceilings are featureless with no furniture to detract from the more important feature: monsters. This 8-bit game has no background music, but the sound effects emulate the simple “ping” of early games.
At the start of the game, the player chooses the gender (male only) and race (dwarf or giant) of their character. Each race and gender have a unique attribute, such as strength, agility, and intelligence. As the player's character navigates the castle, they encounter obstacles and monsters that must be defeated. The game also includes a variety of weapons, such as swords, arrows, and magical staffs, that the player can use to fight the monsters. The Dragon cards picked up during the game help the player in battle.
The aim of the game is to reach the deepest level before the three hours allocated to complete the game runs out. Players receive points for slaying monsters, healing themselves, and destroying objects. The final score is dependent on the player's success in completing the tasks, the speed with which the tasks were completed, and the number of items the player has collected.
Gorgon was well-received and received critical acclaim in the early days of computer gaming. The labyrinth-like levels, the game’s striking graphics, and the unique characters make Gorgon a challenging and entertaining game. Due to its basic requirements, it is still playable in emulator format, making it an absolute classic of the 8-bit gaming era.
