Description Meteor Storm

Meteor Storm was an Atari 8-bit game released in 1982 for the Atari 400 and 800Computer systems. It was one of the first sci-fi video games of its kind leaped on to the burgeoning 8-bit platform.

The game was developed by Rick Baker and designed by Steve Baker. It put gamers in control of the last remaining space fighter, a Vectorstar 3500. The Vectorstar 3500 was a single-seat spacecraft that had to be navigated through the treacherous meteor storm. It was equipped with six missiles that had to be managed wisely, as each depletion incurred an additional one hundred points of damage.

In addition to the meteor threats, gamers were confronted by various enemy ships, including the Agar Laser Ship. Enemies had to be avoided at all costs as it could quickly deplete a player's reserve of missiles. Furthermore, Meteor Storm challenged its players to complete increasingly difficult levels within the allotted time, which made it all the more testing.

One unique feature of Meteor Storm was its digitized voice recordings which, as far as 8-bit games of that era went, was relatively rare for the time. It gave the title some much needed personality, and a sense of atmosphere. Furthermore, the soundtrack was something special; it was mysterious and ethereal, adding a further element of mystique to the game.

Gameplay wise, Meteor Storm was intense and frenetic. Players had to move quickly while also carefully managing their resources. It was a tricky balancing act between offense and defense, as haphazardly firing missiles could incur hefty damage.

Meteor Storm was an ambitious game for 1982 that managed to bring the qualities of an sci-fi arcade game to the Atari 8-bit platform. It was the perfect blend of challenging gameplay, unique features and an atmospheric soundtrack, which gave a glimpse into the possibilities that 8-bit gaming had to offer at the dawn of the home console era.
