Description Mine Fields

Mine Fields is a compact strategy puzzle released for Windows Mobile in 2004, designed to fit the hand-held format of early touch-screen devices. The game places the player on a small, grid-based field where each square may conceal a hidden danger or safe ground. The objective is to clear the board by revealing safe squares while avoiding concealed mines. Quick reflexes, methodical deduction, and careful flagging decisions are rewarded, creating a tense, satisfying loop suitable for short sessions or longer playthroughs.

Controls rely on the stylus for direct interaction. A tap on a square reveals it, and a long-press toggles a flag to mark suspected mines. When a square is uncovered, a number indicates how many adjacent mines lurk in surrounding tiles. Safe reveals cascade into adjacent cells automatically under certain conditions, accelerating progress on easier boards. Hitting a mine ends the round immediately, while successful clears unlock higher tiers. A small timer tracks pace, encouraging deliberate play rather than reflex-only action.

The game ships with multiple play modes, including Classic Field, Time Trial, and Survival Challenge. Classic Field presents a standard grid with a fixed mine density, while Time Trial tasks players to clear boards within a strict time limit, rewarding speed with bonus points. Survival Challenge pits the player against an endless series of boards, with increasing mine counts and stricter scoring. A randomization option ensures fresh layouts per session. Progression is tracked with a local score ledger, unlocking larger grids and new color palettes as you advance.

Visuals favor clarity and legibility on the Windows Mobile display. The board uses a clean, high-contrast grid with soft shading on revealed tiles. Numeric hints use bold digits and distinct colors to communicate danger at a glance. Mines are represented by stylized hazard icons. The interface features minimal chrome, a compact status bar, and contextual menus accessible with a tap-and-hold. Animations are restrained but convey impact when a mine is triggered, and flags snap crisply into place.

Audio supports the tempo of play with short, crisp cues. A soft chime marks a safe reveal, a rising tone accompanies the approach of danger, and a sharp click confirms a flag placement. An unobtrusive ambient loop suggests a field or desert setting without distracting from focus. The combined feedback of touch, sound, and responsive controls fosters a sense of control and momentum, making Mine Fields suitable for quick sessions between tasks as well as extended sessions when the day allows.
