Monte Carlo Baccarat

Monte Carlo Baccarat is a video game in the simulation genre developed by Brian A. Rice, Inc. and published by Capstone Software originally released in 1991. It is currently playable on DOS.

Monte Carlo Baccarat is another decent release in the genre that Capstone seems to do best (at least compared to their horrendous action-adventure titles): casino games.

Like Trump Castle 2, this is a reasonably realistic simulation of the game of baccarat as played in Monte Carlo. Up to four players can play at a time, and true to real baccarat (which is reputed to be the favorite game of high rollers), very high stakes can be placed in this computer version: even $500 or more. Baccarat is a relatively simple game that relies more on luck than skill. All you have to do is decide how much you want to bet, make your bet selection from the 3 available bets, and let the dealer do the rest.

A brief explanation of the rules: Baccarat is a card game that is dealt from a shoe containing 6 or 8 decks of cards. The dealer deals two hands: the 'dealer's' hand and the 'player's' hand. Before the hands are dealt, you can bet on the dealer's hand, the player's hand or a tie. Winning bets on the banker or player are paid 1:1, but a 5% commission is charged on banker bets, making the net odds on such bets 0.95 to 1. Once a bet has been placed, there is no chance to make further decisions: both the banker's hand and the player's hand are dealt according to fixed rules, resulting in final hands of two or three cards each. The value of a hand is determined by adding up the values of the individual cards: tens and face cards are counted as zero, while all other cards are counted by the number of 'pips' on the face of the card. Only the last digit of the total is used, so all baccarat hands have values in the range of 0 to 9 inclusive. The hand with the highest value wins; if the hands have the same value, the result is a tie. In this game, tie bets pay 8:1.

Nice VGA graphics, an intuitive mouse-based interface and even pleasant music accompany this fun little game. Recommended for Baccarat fans, but those looking for a more complete and long-lasting casino game should check out the Trump Castle series.
