Courageous Perseus

MSX, FM-7 1985
Courageous Perseus was a MSX game released in 1985 to much fanfare and anticipation. Developed by the renowned Japanese game company Konami, this adventure-packed game quickly became a hit amongst gamers worldwide, cementing its place in gaming history. It was the first-ever MSX game to use isometric graphics, which added a whole new level of depth and immersion to the gameplay. The game follows the story of Perseus, a bold and brave warrior tasked with rescuing the princess Andromeda from the clutches of the dreaded Medusa. Players take on the role of Perseus and embark on a perilous journey through ancient Greece, filled with mythical creatures and challenging obstacles. The game's graphics were a significant selling point, with vibrant colors and detailed backgrounds that brought the ancient Greek world to life. The use of isometric graphics also allowed for more subtle gameplay mechanics, such as strategic combat and puzzle-solving, adding an element of strategy to the game. The gameplay itself was praised for its fluidity and challenging nature. Players had to navigate through various levels, each with its own set of enemies and puzzles. The combat system was also well-received, as it required players to use different weapons and tactics to defeat enemies effectively. One of the game's standout features was its boss battles, which pitted Perseus against some of the most iconic monsters of Greek mythology, such as the Minotaur and the Hydra. These battles were not only visually stunning but also required players to think strategically to defeat their foes. Another notable aspect of Courageous Perseus was its soundtrack, which was composed by the legendary Konami Kukeiha Club. The music perfectly captured the game's adventurous spirit and added an extra layer of immersion to the gameplay experience. Unfortunately, despite its initial success, Courageous Perseus did not receive any sequels or remakes, making it a cult classic amongst MSX enthusiasts. However, it remains a beloved and influential title in the history of MSX gaming, paving the way for future isometric adventure games.

Regional Power II

FM Towns 1992
Regional Power II takes place entirely in space. However, it is not a space combat or trading simulation, but more akin to grand strategy games such as Koei's historical simulation series, with considerable emphasis on construction and research. The player can choose to stick with the campaign, choose from the five scenarios prepared in it from the start, or create their own scenario on a randomly generated space map. The backgrounds of the prepared scenarios are rather abstract, and the player always controls an unnamed high-ranking commander, who leads a few ordinary politicians and admirals. Every planet in space that the player controls can be used for colonization. Space stations can be built in orbit and cities, factories and other facilities can be built on the surface. All of these activities are automated and are not shown visually. Players can also build combat spacecraft and equip them with a variety of bodies, engines and weapons such as lasers and missiles. New types of ships and accessories can be researched and eventually produced. Contact with other nations is possible through diplomacy and espionage, but the focus is solely on internal fleet development and fortification of player-controlled planets.
