ALF's Thinking Skills

DOS 1988
ALF's Thinking Skills is a fun edutainment title for young children starring Alf, the beloved alien from a popular 1980s TV show. Like most early childhood programs, such as The Playroom, Alf Thinking Skills offers several mini-games ('lessons'), each of which is designed to teach a concept. In the 'Feed the Cat' game, the goal is to lead Alf to Lucky the cat through a path of small logic problems. For example, you see 3 roads with traffic lights leading to the cat. The correct answer is to choose the road with the green traffic light. The other lessons revolve around the concept of colors and shapes. In one lesson, you must choose the correct object to put in the box based on the criteria given to you by Alf (e. g. 'I want a green or square object'). In another, you must choose the correct description of the objects in the box from a menu of options. The game is a lot of fun, and the good graphics (by 1988 standards) make Alf live in the child's mind. Two thumbs up for this early education title that should help the young children in your house learn basic concepts about logic, shape and color, while having fun in the process.

ALF's World of Words

DOS 1988
ALF's World of Words is a classic DOS game that was originally released back in 1988. Developed by Box Office and published by Mindscape, this educational game was based on the popular 80s TV show ALF. As a child, I spent countless hours playing this game and it still holds a special place in my heart. In this article, I will take a trip down memory lane and dive into the world of ALF's World of Words. The game starts with the lovable alien ALF landing on Earth and finding himself lost and alone. That's where the player comes in - they must help ALF find his way back to his spaceship by completing a series of word-based puzzles. The game is set in different locations, representing different parts of the world. From the bustling streets of New York to the exotic African savanna, each location presents a unique challenge for the player. One of the things that sets ALF's World of Words apart from other educational games of its time is its use of humor. The game is filled with witty dialogue and humorous animations that keep players entertained while they learn. ALF's wisecracks and puns add a lighthearted touch to the game, making it enjoyable for kids and adults alike. It is no wonder that the game was awarded the "Best Instructional Game" by the Software Publishers Association in 1990. The gameplay itself is fun and engaging, with various word games and challenges to keep players on their toes. From spelling bees to word searches, each task is designed to improve vocabulary and spelling skills. In addition, the game also features an interactive dictionary that provides definitions and pronunciation of words, making it a great learning tool for young players. As the player progresses through the game, the challenges become more difficult, keeping them engaged and motivated to improve. As for the graphics and sound, ALF's World of Words may not be the most visually impressive game, but its colorful and cartoonish style adds to its charm. The game's sound effects and music are also well done, adding to the overall immersive experience. Despite its simplicity, the game is well-designed and has a high replay value.
