Pulstar is a horizontally scrolling space shooter for Windows, placing the player at the controls of a heavily armed spacecraft on a mission through hostile regions of the galaxy. The campaign unfolds across a succession of war-torn planets, industrial zones, asteroid fields, and deep-space installations, with each stage presenting a continuous advance from left to right. Enemy formations enter from every direction, while the scrolling landscape introduces tunnels, barriers, moving structures, and narrow passages that demand careful positioning.

The spacecraft begins with a basic forward-firing weapon, but additional power-ups expand its offensive capabilities during play. Collected weapons can alter the shot’s spread, strength, or firing pattern, allowing the player to prepare for different formations and armored targets. A chargeable attack provides a more forceful blast when held and released at the right moment, while temporary defensive equipment can absorb danger or give the ship a brief advantage. Because weapons and enhancements are lost when the craft is destroyed, maintaining control and protecting a developed loadout are central to a successful run.

Enemy behavior is varied throughout the mission. Small fighters attack in compact groups, larger craft release streams of projectiles, and ground installations add fire from the lower and upper edges of the screen. Some opponents arrive in fixed patterns, while others adjust their approach to the player’s position. Environmental hazards are equally important, with obstacles and confined routes turning movement into a matter of timing rather than simple reaction. At the end of each stage, large mechanical guardians test both firepower and endurance through multiple attack phases, changing their patterns as damage is inflicted.

The visual style combines brightly colored spacecraft and weapon effects with detailed science-fiction backgrounds. Metallic corridors, cratered surfaces, burning skies, and massive industrial machinery give each area a distinct appearance without obscuring incoming fire. Explosions are large and immediate, making successful attacks easy to follow, while the scrolling scenery provides a constant sense of speed. The Windows presentation supports smooth movement and clear animation, preserving the direct arcade character of the action.

Audio reinforces the mission’s relentless pace with driving electronic music and sharp effects for gunfire, impacts, explosions, and power-up collection. Sound cues help identify important changes during combat, particularly the arrival of large enemies and the activation of stronger weapons. Pulstar is designed for repeated attempts: familiar routes gradually become easier to read, but crowded formations, limited protection, and demanding boss encounters continue to challenge experienced players. Success depends on memorizing hazards, choosing when to attack, and keeping the spacecraft alive long enough to reach the final confrontation.
