In 1987, Commodore 64 players were introduced to Raid 2000; an exciting, colourful shoot-em-up game. Initially, players are thrust into a futuristic universe populated by deadly enemy forces. The game begins with the player's spacecraft outfitted with an impressive selection of weapons; including three types of projectiles, missiles and ricocheting bullets. With these tools, they must battle through five increasingly difficult levels of combat.
The goal of the game is to maneuver the spacecraft through each level while engaging in enemy warfare. Enemy ships come in various shapes and sizes; some of varying speed, some shooting missiles, and some with shields that protect them from shots. Each stage features waves of enemies that the player must shoot down or avoid to remain safe and progress. Along the way, they can also pick up power-ups and earn bonus points for special items. Once a stage is complete, the player is rewarded with a bonus reward, and the round cycle begins anew.
Levels become progressively more difficult as the game progresses, with various bonuses and weapons appearing at different locations. The player's spacecraft can also be upgraded through the game. Extra shields, improved weapons and more powerful missiles can be acquired throughout the levels to up the ante for the game's final showdown. On the final level, the player must make their way through a gauntlet of enemy forces and face off against the end-level boss. Clearing each round earns points and upgrades, and the difficulty increases until the final confrontation is reached.
Visually, Raid 2000 is stunning. The sprites and backdrops maintain a consistent level of high quality, and the colours used are plentiful. The soundtrack is alluring, providing a great accompaniment to the frenetic action of the game. The sound effects are effective too; providing the perfect audio backdrop for the waves of enemy adversaries.
Raid 2000 challenges players to work their way through intense levels of shooting-action. With colorful graphics, tight gameplay, and a wide arsenal of weapons, it provides an intense and enjoyable experience. It still stands as an enjoyable classic of the Commodore 64.
