Red Max

Red Max is a video game in the racing / driving genre developed by Codemasters and published by Codemasters originally released in 1987. It is currently playable on Commodore 64.

The survivors of the Global War had a new problem to face, the Sun had begun its Super Nova cycle and a solution had to be found and implemented in a couple of years. The solution was to colonize the Moon and create huge anti-gravity orbs to send the Moon towards the Sun and when it was close enough, the orbs were activated to send the Moon into deep space. The plan was a success and now the humans living on the Moon are in hibernation for 1200 years waiting for the Moon to find a new Solar System and a new Sun to orbit.

You are awakened from your hibernation when an alarm sounds telling you that renegade Death Lords have landed on the Moon and have planted 27 fission mines on the surface and disrupted the power supply. You must get on your space bike and deactivate all the mines before descending to the surface to power up eight nuclear core cooling systems, shut down four power plants and awaken nine crew members to fight and defeat the Lords. Your bike has a dwindling fuel gauge, but fuel can be found and used to keep it full.

The game is viewed from above with a small portion of each level shown on the screen and the screen scrolls in all directions as you move. In addition to the mines to find, there are several switches to turn off and on to progress through the game and you have to watch out for laser gates that turn on and off. Electric fences that turn off keep the fence off for a while before turning back on, so be careful not to get trapped. There is also slime that lowers your shield and must be avoided. If your shield or fuel runs out, or you touch the electric fences, you lose one of three lives.
