Rescue Raiders is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Sir-tech Software, Inc. and published by Sir-tech Software, Inc. originally released in 1984. It is currently playable on Apple II.

Rescue Raiders, a game released by the computer company Apple in 1984, was a unique twist on the action-adventure genre. This disk-based computer game was the first and only Apple II game to use a joystick as a controller. Players embarked on epic missions to battle alien forces and rescue a group of scientists, stolen by the villains and taken to an unknown planet.

At the onset of each mission, players were presented with a selection of five varied landscapes including: mountains, caves, rivers, deserts, and clouds. The goal was to locate the scientists, while battling enemies such as tanks, robot dogs, and flying aliens, and avoid obstacles like falling rocks and land mines. Players were armed with a range of weapons including teleporters, laser guns, torpedoes, and missiles. When all of the scientists were rescued, the mission would be complete.

Despite its joystick control element, Rescue Raiders was a remarkably challenging game. Bonus points could be accumulated by rescuing the scientists quickly, and gathering as many items as possible along the way. However, the game predicted how the player would navigate the environment, so anticipation was key to finding the scientists before they were taken away. Other bonus points were earned for positive acts, such as caring for helpless animals, as well as achieving optimal shots and timing each move perfectly.

In addition to its straightforward but captivating story line, Rescue Raiders was also praised for its creative use of audio and visual effects. While roaming through each landscape, players were serenaded by a whimsical soundtrack and guided by a bright green arrow that served as a helpful navigational tool.

On top of that, the game featured extensive gaming support in the form of an AppleSoft BASIC instruction manual and disk containing a program editor. This editor allowed players to create and customize levels without having to start over, facilitating greater immersion and a more personalized gaming experience.

Rescue Raiders provided hours of original gameplay and continues to be remembered as an innovative classic in the world of 1980s gaming. Its high-quality production values, advanced joystick control, and creative puzzle elements made it a welcomed arrival among the Apple II community in the early 1980s.
