Solo Flight

Solo Flight is a video game in the simulation genre developed by MicroProse Software, Inc. and published by MicroProse Software, Inc. originally released in 1985. It is currently playable on DOS, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64.

A simulation in which you have to fly Mail runs from many different airports in one of the three American states of Kansas, Colorado and Washington (choosing Washington allows you to fly in the neighboring state of Oregon as well). Advanced features include VOR, DME and ILS tower readings.

Scoring the choices made means you have to weight certain things like how much fuel you might need for each delivery. Each delivery is to a different airport, but there is also the option to carry multiple loads, each with additional weight to consider. Having a heavier load means burning more fuel and a difference in aircraft handling, but can result in a higher score.

Various weather conditions, such as clear, night, light cloud and even heavy cloud require IFR skills. It is entirely possible to fly using only instruments in total cloud blindness until such time as you emerge from a cloud to see the runway, hopefully as you had planned. In fact, a precisely planned route using both VORS can get you lined up accurately and ready for a final descent using the ILS.

However, you really need the maps and attempting Solo Flight without them is pretty useless - serious play requires maps for VOR plotting.
