Starlancer is a video game in the simulation genre developed by Warthog Plc and published by Microsoft Corporation originally released in 2000. It is currently playable on Windows.
Starlancer, released in 2000, is a space flight combat game set in the year 2160. Developed by Digital Anvil and co-published by Microsoft Corporation, this highly-rated windows game contains a single player campaign, a co-operative campaign, and a multiplayer game.
Players take the role of Lance Casey, the newest and youngest recruit of the 58th Fighter Squadron. As part of the Allied United Planets coalition, the 58th is assigned tasks at the frontier of hostile alien empires. The objectives range from covert reconnaissance to full-scale fleet engagements - all of which you must maneuver to peaceably de-escalate the conflicts your squadron encounters.
The gameplay of Starlancer is designed with a realistic Mars project physics model. For the time it was released, the flight model for the game was quite sophisticated. Players must maneuver their ships in order to line up shots on enemy vessels. Heat-seeking missiles, laser cannons, rail guns, and more are available for the players to make use of along with a generous array of counter-measures.
The game also offers a vast selection of spacecraft for players to choose from. Each craft have unique controls and handling properties based on the nation of origin. As players progress through the game, more ships become available to choose from and upgrade.
The single player campaign can last approximately 25 hours and it presents a fairly balanced mix of mission types. A well written story will pull players through the game, complete with intense dialogue and notable characters.
The graphics of Starlancer are beautifully rendered. Despite some hiccups in the graphics rendering, it provides a large leap over similar games from the time. All-in-all, this game is highly rated for its expansive combat, realistic flight model, and beautifully rendered graphics.
