Initially released for the Microsoft 8-bit MSX line of computers in 1983, the game follows the adventures of a plucky mountain climber named George and his trusty eagle sidekick as they endeavor to ascend frozen mountains and escape from ravenous monsters.
Gameplay in Step Up sees the player traverse various ice-laden stages, with George slowly ascending upwards on his mountain ends relying on careful bounces on soft snowdrifts to keep his momentum moving in the right direction. The player is equipped with a limited array of offensive power-ups which, when fired, turn into helpful wings that propel the pair ever higher. Coins collected along the way can be exchanged at the local store for items like lightning bolts or shields that aid in protection from the swarms of aliens out to get them.
The play difficulty increases with each stage, with more slippery ice patches, inescapable pitfalls, and ever-energetic monsters to dodge. Tauntingly placed treasure caches tempting the player to navigate precarious crevices, and the strategic use of bubbles – which provide invulnerability from monsters – add to the challenge.
Step Up also features a two-player simultaneous mode, allowing a friend or family member to join in the action. Overall, it’s a fun and exciting game that is great for gamers of all skill levels.
