The player controls a spaceship, and must defend their planet from an alien invasion. The player must shoot down the aliens, and prevent them from reaching the planet. The game is split into two parts; the first part is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up, and the second part is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up. The game is one of the first games to use scrolling backgrounds.
The game was well received by critics, and was praised for its graphics and gameplay. Superdeflex is considered to be one of the classic ZX Spectrum games, and is one of the most popular games for the system.
