Terminal Terror

Terminal Terror is a video game in the action genre developed by Pie in the Sky Software and published by Expert Software, Inc. originally released in 1994. It is currently playable on DOS.

Terminal Terror is a sort of much improved sequel to Pie in The Sky's campy 3D shooter Lethal Tender.

Despite the banal graphics and clichéd storyline (another Rambo-style infiltration and capture mission), the game offers many innovative features that didn't become standards in the genre until id's successful DOOM. Among the most notable features of Terminal Terror that add a nice touch of realism to the game are: Civilians. If you kill them, you will be branded a 'renegade' and thrown in jail. However, you can try to give them ninja kicks and GOO gun attacks with impunity ;) Inventory area. Allows you to store items you don't need right away, such as medallions and ammo. Grenades, which can be thrown at different distances. The longer you hold down the space bar, the farther the grenade will travel. They bounce off walls realistically and you are vulnerable to their explosions unless you have the gas mask in your inventory. This is a fun feature that predates DOOM by at least a few months. Some very creative weapons. The sticky GOO gun, for example, envelops the enemy in a sticky substance that can't be removed without the anti-agent. So you can completely disable enemy guards and finish them off with something else. On-screen radar, which always shows your position in relation to the area you are in. It is extremely useful when you get lost in a dark area or in a maze. You must first find the radar, but it is automatically activated once you put it in your inventory. Different effects of hits on different parts of the body. For example, if your right leg is hit too many times, you will not be able to walk in a straight line, but will always tend to gravitate to the right when walking. In addition to these new features that make the action more fun and varied, Terminal Terror also sets itself apart from other FPSs by paying equal attention to combat evasion. Learning to dodge enemies is crucial to your success in the game. A special screen shows how vulnerable you are to enemy detection; the higher the number, the harder it is to detect you. There are many factors involved in your profile. The profile is raised by fast movement and shooting, and lowered by stillness and non-lethal weapons that don't make much noise. Definitely a cool concept that predates Thief by a few years.

Overall, Terminal Terror strikes me as a surprisingly enjoyable game that has a lot to offer. Too bad its mediocre graphics and low profile (marketing-wise) doom the game to oblivion, so far. If you play FPSs for their gameplay and not for their pretty graphics, you'll find a lot to like in this underdog. The game even has multiple paths and optional missions depending on the decisions you make during gameplay.
