Description The Game
The Apple II videogame, The Game, is an exciting combination of arcade and strategy gameplay. Developed and released in 1983, it was an advanced title for its time, taking players into a detailed world of exploration and discovery.
At its core, The Game is text-based, with players being presented with rules and instructions as they progress. Players move around a grid-based 2D universe, visited by monsters, white rabbits, and magic carpets. As players navigate this strange landscape, they must collect various objects and weapons to prepare for a final confrontation with an enemy creature at the end of the game. As players explore, they are awarded points for all the items they collect, with more points awarded for defeating monsters.
The objects that can be collected are varied, ranging from a magical wand, treasure chests, suits of armor, magical potions, and more. Most of these items are connected to puzzles, and when solved, they unlock new possibilities in the game. The objects that can be used as weapons are equally diverse, from swords and arrows to a range of magical spells. Players can also use a variety of special moves, such as the Summons manoeuver, to battle enemies.
The Game included two different modes, giving players different challenges and allowing them to customize their experience. The normal mode gives players a set amount of time to complete the game, while the advanced mode pushes the difficulty level higher, providing a much greater challenge.
The Game also boasts a unique soundtrack and excellent graphics. The visuals, although primitive by today’s standards, were ahead of their time when the game was released. The soundtrack, composed by game creator Dustin Suekawa, is considered one of the best to feature in any Apple II title.
The Game remains a classic title for Apple II gamers. Its simple approach to maze running and deceptively detailed systems of puzzles and combat offer hours of gameplay, with an enjoyable level of challenge that is often surprisingly difficult. Even after thirty-seven years, its impact can still be felt in the many modern gaming titles of today.
